Artist Note
This two-part series was inspired by the film Never Look Away, a story of art, love, and defiance during Nazi Germany. In the film, an art teacher implies these two questions as their answers may lead to great (read: authentic) art. They felt like a call to responsibility, especially in times when power distorts truth and dehumanizes entire groups of people.
As people, we shape culture through how we show up and participate in it. Our voice matters. Our perspective matters. And paying attention is a form of care.
These paintings are reminders to not look away, to know ourselves, and to let what we know help shape a more compassionate world.
